Cryotherapy

Accurate diagnosis before treatment is non-negotiable. Not all lesion types are suitable for cryotherapy, and in some cases surgical removal or biopsy is the more appropriate course of action.
The Spierings Medical Group offers specialist cryotherapy, using liquid nitrogen to precisely freeze and destroy targeted skin lesions in a controlled manner. Commonly used for warts, seborrhoeic keratoses, actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions), and selected superficial skin conditions, cryotherapy is a quick, effective, non-surgical option when the diagnosis is confirmed and the lesion is appropriate for this approach.
Precisely Targeted Cold Therapy — Eliminating Unwanted Lesions Without Surgery
Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to rapidly freeze and destroy targeted skin lesions in a controlled manner. The freeze-thaw process causes cellular damage and local tissue destruction — leading to gradual removal of the lesion as the skin heals. Commonly used for warts, seborrhoeic keratoses, actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous), and selected superficial skin cancers.
Who is This For?
Suitable for individuals with:
- Benign lesions such as warts or seborrhoeic keratoses
- Pre-cancerous lesions such as actinic keratoses
- Selected superficial skin conditions requiring targeted treatment
- A preference for a quick, non-surgical option
Not suitable for all lesion types or deeper skin cancers. Accurate diagnosis before treatment is non-negotiable.
How it Works
Liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the lesion, rapidly reducing tissue temperature to extreme lows. This causes:
- Formation of ice crystals within cells
- Disruption of cellular structures
- Localised tissue destruction
The area may blister or crust, then gradually separates from the skin as new healthy skin forms beneath. Depth and duration of freezing are carefully controlled to ensure effectiveness while protecting surrounding tissue.
Clinically Proven Benefits
- Quick and targeted — no surgical excision required in many cases
- Minimal preparation
- Effective for a wide range of common skin lesions
- Performed in a standard clinic setting
What to Expect
- Pain level — Mild to moderate stinging or burning during freezing — brief and resolves quickly.
- Downtime — Minimal. The area may blister or form a scab; normal activities continue.
- Sessions — Some lesions resolve after one treatment; others require repeat sessions.
- Session length — Typically a few minutes per lesion.
- First results — Treated lesion usually resolves over 1 to 3 weeks as skin heals.
- Frequency — Repeat treatments scheduled every few weeks if needed.
Preparation and Aftercare
Before treatment:
- Ensure the lesion has been properly assessed
- Avoid applying irritant products to the area
After treatment:
- Do not pick or disrupt any blister or scab
- Keep the area clean and dry
- Allow natural healing
- Protect the area from excessive sun exposure
Clinical Insight
Cryotherapy is a precision-based destructive treatment — used to selectively remove abnormal tissue. Its effectiveness depends on correct diagnosis, appropriate technique, and careful control of treatment depth. Not all lesions are suitable, and in some cases surgical removal or biopsy is more appropriate.
