Understanding Pyoderma Gangrenosum
Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare, non-infectious inflammatory skin condition that causes rapidly progressing, extremely painful ulcers. It occurs most commonly on the legs and is frequently misdiagnosed as an infected wound or vascular ulcer, leading to inappropriate treatment and significant delay in proper care.
The condition is driven by immune dysregulation and is associated with systemic conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and haematological disorders. One of the most critical aspects of PG management is that surgical intervention or debridement without the correct diagnosis can cause the condition to worsen through a phenomenon known as pathergy. Getting the diagnosis right first is not just preferable. It is essential.
