Chronic Wounds

Chronic wounds are rarely just a skin problem. They are almost always a signal that something else needs to be understood and addressed — and that is exactly the kind of thinking we bring to every patient we see.
The Spierings Medical Group provides specialist chronic wound care, offering clinical and consultant-led assessment and structured management for patients living with wounds that have failed to progress through normal healing. A wound that has not healed within four weeks deserves specialist attention — not simply more of the same treatment.
Understanding Chronic Wounds
A chronic wound is one that has failed to progress through the normal stages of healing within an expected timeframe, typically defined as four weeks or more. Chronic wounds are almost always the result of an underlying condition or factor impairing the healing process, and they will not resolve reliably until that underlying issue is identified and addressed.
Common causes include poor circulation, diabetes, venous insufficiency, infection, nutritional deficiencies, and inappropriate wound management. In some cases a wound that appears to be healing slowly may have an unusual aetiology, such as an inflammatory or malignant cause, that requires a different diagnostic approach entirely.
Patients with chronic wounds often carry a significant burden, both physical and emotional. Many have been seen repeatedly without clear answers or meaningful progress. Specialist assessment brings structure, diagnosis, and a realistic plan to a situation that has often felt hopeless.
Our Approach
We approach chronic wounds with the thoroughness they require, assessing the wound, investigating the underlying factors impeding healing, and forming a structured, evidence-based management plan that addresses both the wound and its cause.
We coordinate with vascular surgeons, endocrinologists, dietitians, and other specialists where the clinical picture demands it, and we provide consistent follow-up and honest communication throughout. Our patients always know what is happening and why.
