Infected Wounds

Whether you are dealing with a wound that is showing signs of early infection or one that has become significantly more complex, specialist input ensures that the right approach is taken from the outset.
The Spierings Medical Group provides specialist care for infected wounds, offering clinical and consultant-led assessment and targeted treatment for patients managing wound infections that are complex, persistent, or failing to respond to initial management. Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment — and not all wound infections are the same.
Understanding Infected Wounds
Wound infection occurs on a spectrum, from localised superficial infection to deep tissue involvement and systemic spread. Identifying where on that spectrum a wound sits, and what organism is driving the infection, is essential to choosing the right treatment.
Not all wound inflammation represents infection, and not all infection requires the same response. Overuse of antibiotics in wound care is a recognised problem that contributes to antimicrobial resistance and can disrupt the wound environment. Undertreating a genuine infection carries equally serious risks. Clinical judgment, informed by proper assessment and appropriate investigation, is what makes the difference.
Our Approach
We examine the wound thoroughly, assess the surrounding tissue, take swabs and cultures where indicated, and form a treatment plan based on the specific clinical picture. We use antimicrobials judiciously, monitor response closely, and adjust the plan as needed.
Our goal is to resolve the infection effectively, protect the wound's healing potential, and reduce the risk of recurrence, with every decision made in the patient's best interest.
