The Spierings Medical Group provides specialist pressure injury care, offering clinical and consultant-led assessment and treatment for existing pressure wounds alongside individualised prevention plans for patients who are at risk. Pressure injuries are largely preventable — and for those that do occur, early specialist input significantly improves outcomes.

Understanding Pressure Injuries

Pressure injuries develop when sustained pressure, shear, or friction reduces blood flow to the skin and underlying tissue, causing damage that ranges from non-blanchable redness to full-thickness wounds exposing bone, tendon, or muscle. They most commonly develop over bony prominences such as the sacrum, heels, hips, and ankles.

They predominantly affect patients with limited mobility, including those who are bedbound, wheelchair-dependent, or recovering from surgery or illness. They are associated with significant pain, increased infection risk, prolonged hospital stays, and reduced quality of life. In vulnerable patients, they can become life-threatening.

Our Approach

We provide comprehensive care encompassing both treatment of existing pressure injuries and proactive, individualised prevention planning. For existing wounds, we assess and stage the injury accurately and develop a structured management plan that addresses the wound, the surrounding skin, and the contributing factors.

For at-risk patients, we create practical, evidence-based prevention plans tailored to their specific risk profile, living situation, and care needs. We work collaboratively with families, carers, and other healthcare providers to ensure prevention strategies are consistently understood and implemented.
