Understanding Lipoedema
Lipoedema is a chronic condition characterised by the symmetrical, abnormal accumulation of fat, most commonly in the hips, thighs, buttocks, and lower legs. It is distinct from ordinary weight gain and largely unresponsive to dietary restriction or exercise. It almost exclusively affects women and is significantly underdiagnosed.
Patients frequently experience tenderness, easy bruising, and a disproportionate appearance between the upper and lower body. Many have been told they simply need to try harder, which reflects a failure of diagnosis rather than a failure of effort. Lipoedema can also progress over time and in some cases is associated with secondary lymphoedema, making early identification important.
