Understanding the Diabetic Foot
Diabetes affects the feet through two primary mechanisms: peripheral neuropathy, which reduces sensation and makes patients less aware of injury or pressure, and peripheral vascular disease, which impairs blood supply and the ability to heal. Together these factors create a significant risk of foot ulceration, infection, and in serious cases, amputation.
Diabetic foot ulcers are slow to heal, prone to infection, and can deteriorate rapidly if not managed correctly. Even small wounds such as blisters, abrasions, or areas of callus breakdown can become serious problems in patients with significant neuropathy or vascular compromise. Prevention and early intervention are not just advisable. They are critical.
