Scar Management

Not all scars need treatment, and not all treatments are right for every scar. Our role is to assess your scar honestly, explain your options clearly, and support you in making the decisions that are right for you.
The Spierings Medical Group provides specialist scar management, offering clinical and consultant-led, evidence-based care for patients looking to improve the appearance, texture, and comfort of scars resulting from surgery, injury, burns, or skin conditions. Effective scar management requires the right intervention at the right time — and specialist guidance ensures that every recommendation is appropriate, realistic, and genuinely suited to the individual.
Understanding Scars & Scar Management
Scarring is the natural result of the skin's healing process following injury, surgery, burns, or inflammatory skin conditions. While all scars change over time, typically softening and fading during the first one to two years, some scars behave abnormally, becoming thickened, raised, pigmented, symptomatic, or functionally restrictive.
Hypertrophic scars remain within the boundaries of the original wound and may flatten over time. Keloid scars extend beyond the wound boundary and are unlikely to resolve without treatment. Both can be uncomfortable, itchy, and distressing, particularly when located in visible or sensitive areas.
Scar management is most effective when it begins at the right time and uses the right combination of approaches for the specific scar type, location, and skin. Starting too early, too late, or with an inappropriate intervention can compromise results.
Our Approach
We assess every scar individually, considering its type, age, location, the patient's skin tone, and their specific goals before making any recommendations. We offer a range of evidence-based interventions and combine them thoughtfully based on what the individual scar and patient actually need.
We are honest about what scar management can and cannot achieve. Our goal is meaningful improvement in appearance, texture, symptoms, and confidence, delivered through a plan that is realistic, well-timed, and properly monitored over time.
