Understanding Stoma Care
A stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdomen that allows waste to leave the body through the abdominal wall. Stomas may be temporary or permanent and are formed as part of treatment for conditions including colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and bowel obstruction. While a stoma can significantly improve or save a patient's life, adapting to one requires time, support, and careful clinical management.
Peristomal skin complications are among the most common difficulties stoma patients face, including irritation, contact dermatitis, leakage-related skin breakdown, and changes that affect the function of the appliance.
