Should I See a Consultant Family Medicine Physician or an Orthopaedic Surgeon?

Many aches and pains can be assessed and treated by a Consultant Family Medicine Physician before specialist care is needed.

A Consultant Family Medicine Physician is often the best first step if you have:

  • A recent minor injury or sprain
  • Mild back, muscle, or joint pain
  • Pain associated with a general illness
  • Early arthritis symptoms
  • Multiple medical conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms
  • Symptoms where the diagnosis isn't yet clear

An Orthopaedic Surgeon may be the right choice if you have:

  • Persistent hip or knee pain lasting several weeks
  • Arthritis affecting your daily activities
  • Pain that hasn't improved with treatment
  • A sports injury involving the knee or hip
  • Joint instability or recurrent giving way
  • A suspected ligament, tendon, or cartilage injury
  • A fracture requiring specialist management
  • You have been told you may need surgery or would like a second opinion

Should I See a Physiotherapist or an Orthopaedic Surgeon?

This is one of the most common questions patients ask.

A physiotherapist is an expert in rehabilitation, exercise therapy, and restoring movement. Many musculoskeletal problems improve with physiotherapy, particularly after an injury or once a diagnosis has already been made. An Orthopaedic Surgeon specialises in diagnosing conditions affecting the bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons, determining why the problem has occurred, and deciding whether further investigations, injections, or surgery are required.

Physiotherapy may be appropriate if:

  • You've already received a diagnosis
  • You're recovering from an injury or operation
  • You need help improving strength, flexibility, or movement
  • Your symptoms are gradually improving but you need rehabilitation

An Orthopaedic assessment is usually the better first step if:

  • You don't know what's causing your pain
  • Your symptoms are severe or worsening
  • Your joint locks, gives way, or feels unstable
  • You have persistent swelling
  • You have significant arthritis
  • Physiotherapy has not improved your symptoms
  • You think surgery may be required

Often, the two work together. After diagnosing the problem, your orthopaedic surgeon may recommend physiotherapy as part of your treatment plan, helping you recover without surgery whenever possible.

When Should I Seek Emergency Care?

Some injuries require immediate assessment in an emergency department rather than waiting for a clinic appointment.

Seek emergency medical care immediately if you experience:

  • A suspected broken bone with obvious deformity
  • Bone protruding through the skin
  • A joint that appears dislocated
  • Severe pain after a significant injury
  • An inability to stand or bear weight following trauma
  • Loss of movement or sensation below an injury
  • A cold, pale, or blue hand or foot after an injury
  • Severe back pain associated with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly worsening weakness in the legs

Prompt treatment can reduce complications and improve recovery.
